Windsor Central Business District by William Kachmaryk

After nearly 61 years in private practice, I've been called upon by various sources to engage in projects that have either come to fruition or have been relegated to the archives.

This project was solicited by the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association (DWBIA) in relation to several blocks in the central business district on the Detroit River with full vantage of the Detroit skyline.

The area combined commercial, residential, and historical buildings. This notable collection of structures and spaces included Carling Brewery (that had been converted into a formidable municipal art gallery), a historic house that served as the base for the British in the Siege of Detroit in 1812, and a modern auditorium that is now part of St. Clair College.

Unfortunately, a number of these structures, circa 1800s, showed their age due to negligence. There was no prospect of recovery, aside from an urban renaissance akin to what was envisioned across the Detroit River.

The theme of this work was to link all aspects of future development with the existing infrastructure at street level and above.
