Stephen J-S Chang, Member of Long Standing

At the 2021 Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June, the Association honoured its newest Members of Long Standing—individuals who have reached the milestone of 50 years of membership with the OAA as part of Ontario’s architecture profession. Among the recipients this year was Stephen J-S Chang.

Chang says he continues to have a discovery-rich life within the pursuits of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. He was educated at the University of Manitoba and Harvard, and has been a member of the OAA, Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC), Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA).

Chang has worked at his own practice, in the private sector, and in municipal, provincial, and federal governments throughout his career. His projects have included sports facilities and arenas, offices, homes, and penitentiaries. While working in Singapore, he discovered the challenge of integrating traditional Chinese historical design thinking into modern designs. He says he believes Ontario is a place where people from East and West come to settle, and is certain the rich results of design integration will come from his world-class colleagues in the Ontario Association of Architects.
