At the 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM), held on April 11, the Association honoured its newest Members of Long Standing—individuals who have reached the milestone of 50 years of membership with the OAA as part of Ontario’s architecture profession. Among recipients this year was John R. Hix.
John is an esteemed architect with a rich educational background, holding a Bachelor of Architecture from Iowa State University, a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Arts from Cambridge University. Throughout his career, he has shown a deep commitment to climate design, energy efficiency, and the integration of human life with nature. John’s significant contributions to the field of architecture, particularly in Ontario, include projects like the Provident House, Ontario's pioneering active solar house in 1974; and the Alpha Double Envelope Solar House, which received an OAA Award. They stand as testaments to his innovative approach.
John's work extends beyond residential projects to include community and conservation efforts, such as the Ottawa Solar Community, Gower Park Place, and the Quetico Park Visitors Centre, the latter receiving both an OAA Award and a Governor General award. His dedication to sustainable design is also evident in his teaching career, having led courses on climate and architecture at prestigious institutions worldwide, including the University of Toronto, North Carolina State School of Design, and Cambridge University in England.
A renowned writer, John authored The Glass House, exploring the history of horticultural environments. His recent focus on tropical architecture showcases his ability to design structures that naturally modulate environmental forces without relying on artificial cooling, further solidifying his reputation as a pioneer in sustainable architecture.
