At the 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM), held on April 11, the Association honoured its newest Members of Long Standing—individuals who have reached the milestone of 50 years of membership with the OAA as part of Ontario’s architecture profession. Among recipients this year was John Berkeley Stark.
A graduate of the University of Toronto School of Architecture, John began his career at a Toronto firm before becoming an architect. In 1973, he co-founded Stark Temporale Architects with Alex Temporale, marking the beginning of a distinguished career that has seen him as a partner in various firms over the years. For the past 25 years, John has focused on designing recreational homes along the waterfront of Georgian Bay, showcasing his passion for creating elegant and functional spaces.
His dedication extends beyond his profession, evident in his roles as president of the Mississauga Board of Trade and campaign chair for the United Way in the Region of Peel, as well as president & chair of the Board of Directors for the Georgian Bay Land Trust, for which he remains an advisor, primarily involved in fundraising efforts.
Aside from his professional and community commitments, John finds joy and immense pride in family life, being married with three children and four grandchildren. Despite his full-time work, he cherishes his summers on Georgian Bay, where he continues to work and find solace on his island.
