Known as the Temple of Soccer, the Maracanã has been host of numerous sporting events including the 1950 World Cup,1989 American Cup, 2007 Pan American Games, 2013 Confederations Cup, and 2014 World Cup. In 2016 it will also be home to the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games. The stadium holds the record for the most attended game in history, with 199,854 spectators cramming into the newly built stadium for the 1950 World Cup final between Brazil and Uruguay. In 2010, in preparation for the World Cup, the Maracanã went through an extensive reconstruction process that saw the original seating bowl demolished and reconfigured, and the original stadium's concrete roof removed and replaced with a fiberglass tensioned membrane coated with Polytetrafluoroethylene. After its 2010-2013 renovation, the rebuilt stadium currently seats 78,838 spectators.
