During this year’s OAA Virtual Conference in May, the online sessions offered were well-received and provided insights into a variety of topics. The OAA would like to remind members that the 2021 OAA Virtual Sessions are now available on YouTube. This includes the core Continuing Education learning offered at Conference as well as the Sponsored Sessions and Virtual Tours. All available sessions are on the OAA YouTube channel organized in the OAA Virtual Conference Week 2021 playlist. We encourage you to explore these sessions as a suite of on-demand offerings. These sessions are considered unstructured hours when viewed in this format.

At this time, we’d like to spotlight a session offered by one of our generous Conference sponsors. To view the full session, please click here.

Roof decks have come a long way from their purely utilitarian origins. These spaces are now often programmed, environmentally conscious, and promote healthy lifestyles.

Architects have an opportunity to reclaim functional spaces and turn them into destinations, creating harmony between the outdoor space and site’s paving, with a range of finishes that are used for on-grade applications.

The five most common types of roof decks today are:

  1. Ballast/single ply
  2. Roof gardens
  3. Pedestal roof decks
  4. Green roofs
  5. Outdoor amenity spaces

Roof deck hardscape systems not only protect a roof from the elements, they also provide usable space in unique outdoor settings. There are a range of paver products for rooftops and pedestal systems that transform elevated and sloped roof surfaces into spaces that marry function with aesthetics.

This course looks at both street-level roof decks — such as surfaces over parking garages that are designed for pedestrian and vehicular loads--and elevated roof decks above street level. Designers will learn about basic roof systems as well as the range of hardscaping products that are available to them. The course also examines various types of systems such as those using pedestals or those dry laid over an aggregate base.

This session helps viewers:

  • Better understand street-level roof decks as well as the variety of products available
  • Gain an understanding of basic roof construction and hardscaping products available to designers

Designed and installed in some of the most prestigious commercial spaces in North America, Architects, Landscape Architects, and Engineers trust Unilock to bring their architectural vision to life and to withstand the toughest parts of a commercial environment.
