Coliseums, Unidad Deportiva Atanasio Girardot, Medellín, Colombia, 2010

Host of the 2010 South American Games, the coliseums brings together four independent sports buildings (basketball, gymnastics, combat, and volleyball) to create a single complex that mixes semi-covered public spaces with sports arenas and gardens. Putting issues of environmental sustainability to the forefront, the sports complex is carefully oriented and designed to shield from the hot eastern and western sun, while taking advantage of the north-south wind. These design elements come together to create a large scale sports venue that does not require mechanical ventilation or cooling.
