Rosemary House

The house sits on a conventional midblock site in a well-established Toronto neighborhood. The design is mindful of the essential qualities of its context, while introducing inventions that break with conventional boundaries of its neighbours. The exaggerated horizontal coursing and subtle pleating of the limestone masonry ensures that this house is distinct, without being ostentatious or trendy. The house encourages modern family living that is deliberately interactive, open to choices and growth, by employing layered transitions between spaces and a strategy of “endless” corridors. It is a home that will always be understood as both of its time; and a classic.

Jury Comments

The jury described this project as a highly sophisticated urban residence. Interest is created in the way the plan and vertical spaces are interwoven: the architecture achieves an interior that feels serene and comfortable, but is imbued with spatial complexity that will continue to reveal itself over time. The interior detailing, including a variety of complementary materials and the playful use of mirrors, is immaculate.
