Place des Arts (PdA) is the first multidisciplinary art centre of its kinds in Northern Ontario–a cultural facility consisting of seven member organizations which stands as an influential site of excellence for Sudbury, focused on French-Canadian culture and community empowerment. A collaborative endeavour, Moriyama Teshima Architects and Bélanger Salach Architecture worked as lead design architects. The two firms established consensus amongst the seven strong voices to achieve a flexible design that provides services for a wide variety of activities and uses, while contributing to the surrounding urban context. Place des Arts has become a landmark in Sudbury’s downtown.
Jury Comments
“The design team has created a highly cohesive and functional program for a building that houses a multitude of diverse user groups. The form of this building expresses the liveliness of its users and brings life to Sudbury’s downtown revitalization plan. The materiality, both inside and out, uses the historical context of the local community to create a sense of place.”
