Canada’s first new school of architecture in 40 years provides a uniquely integrated, uniquely focused education to Indigenous, Anglophone and Francophone students. Laurentian University’s McEwen School of Architecture addresses resilient architecture and fabrication techniques for northern latitudes, with an emphasis on Indigenous culture, wood construction, local ecologies and resources and design for climate change’s impact. A regeneration catalyst for downtown Sudbury, the McEwen is a didactic instrument for architecture students, with exposed structure in each part: two adaptively reused heritage buildings; a new 36,480-square-foot steel-and-concrete Studio Wing; and a new 15,670-square-foot Library Wing that is a cross-laminated timber (CLT) demonstration project.
