Would you like to become a significant member of a dynamic design-focused firm that is busy, growing, and ambitious in downtown Hamilton?
The Role
We are seeking a talented Senior Architect with a minimum of 15 years and ideally 20 years of relevant experience to join our twenty year old, twelve-person firm in a leadership role as we continue to grow and undertake larger and more challenging commissions.
What We Offer
We offer a positive work-life balance, with flexible hours (all in office work), summer hours all year (4-1/2 day weeks), and minimal overtime. We pay for every hour worked; we don’t allow free work or unpaid overtime. We pay well, aiming for the top end of the SDA Salary Survey. All staff receive an annual self-directed healthcare benefit.
We are committed to design excellence and high-quality service. We believe in a good work environment that values and encourages personal and professional development, and encourage all staff to help cultivate a strong office design culture. Our staff are all encouraged to be active in our community. Our office is intentionally predominantly Architects to provide the broadest skill set addressing any issue.
We work hard, but try to have fun, and all go out together for ‘mandatory’ Thursday lunches provided by the firm. We’ve redeveloped a historic downtown loft warehouse for our unique studio home which illustrates our values and creative abilities in a high-profile downtown location.
We shut down between Christmas and New Year as a paid Bonus to all.
Roughly every two years the firm provides an office-wide Field Trip to experience quality architecture and places. Past trips were to Detroit, Miami, Philadelphia, Havana, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Fallingwater, and Buffalo.
About Us
Founded in 2005 as TCA | Thier + Curran Architects Inc., we enjoy and seek a unique diverse range of design-focused projects from both public and private clients that include education, public buildings, housing of all types, interiors, cultural facilities, hospitality, mixed-use, and healthcare projects. Housing is a firm strength. We also have been doing our own small-scale development work and will continue to do so.
Current projects include a mix of multi-unit housing and affordable/supportive housing, elementary/secondary education and civic work such as libraries/community centers.
We offer the many advantages of working in a medium size office such as lots of variety of building types and sizes. Hamilton provides a vibrant cultural, music, and food scene that we are proud to take part in.
More About the Role
We need someone well-rounded that is versatile, intelligent, grounded and very much hands-on with the broad skills that enable you to manage multiple projects and manage and direct staff, with strong technical knowledge to produce quality contract documents and design drawings. Attention to detail and thoroughness are essentials. A mindset for innovation and sustainability as just part of good design is important.
You must be capable of leading project teams on multiple projects simultaneously, interacting with clients, coordinating consultants, managing contract administration, ensuring quality and complete documents and more. Ideally we are seeking an individual with broad skills and experience in all phases of project delivery. You must be proficient in Autocad and have a thorough knowledge of the Ontario Building Code.
Excellent communication (both written and oral) and leadership skills are essential for effective teamwork, and in order to interact with clients, consultants, authorities, and contractors. We need a dynamic, highly skilled, organized, motivated, independent self-starter, ideally with a well-rounded skill set in all areas of practice.
Any additional unique skills that would enhance our ability to attract and service our clients while achieving design excellence would be an advantage. Strong design skills would be a fabulous bonus, but are not essential. Marketing and promotion capabilities would also be fabulous. Contract administration experience would be great.
The pay range would be $100-125k per annum, commensurate with experience, abilities and qualifications.
Your responsibilities will be limited only by your capabilities, initiative, and level of commitment. There is potential to assume a leadership role or future partnership role for the right person.
