CSA Standard S478, Durability in Buildings, establishes the minimum criteria and requirements for designing, constructing, and maintaining durable buildings. The standard is a key resource for establishing and implementing project sustainability and durability strategies.
The OAA therefore undertook a review of the proposed draft of the new edition of CSA S478 Durability in Buildings (CSA S478:26). In its submission, the OAA commended CSA for including extensive climate considerations in its proposal, but identified key issues for consideration to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of the draft standard. The OAA’s submission focuses on the following four topics:
- the definition of “designer;”
- clarification about the standard’s applicability to different project typologies;
- omission of mechanical and electrical systems; and
- assignment of responsibilities to key parties involved in a project.
