A new Royal George Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake is slowly taking shape.

Niagara-on-the-Lake’s heritage committee approved at its July 8 meeting a heritage permit application for the redevelopment of the Royal George Theatre on Queen Street.

Council had previously approved an official plan amendment, rezoning bylaw and site plan applications for the construction of a new theatre at 85 Queen St. The heritage permit was required to meet the requirements under Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Queen-Picton Heritage Conservation District designation.

Once council approves the application, the decision is subjected to a 30-day appeal period.

“This is the last portion,” said Tim Jennings, chief executive officer of the Shaw Festival, as officials seek a building permit for the estimated $90-million project.
