Georgina’s Multi-Use Recreation Complex (MURC) has been recognized as a “beloved” space in Ontario by a provincial architectural authority.
Earlier this month, the MURC was selected as one of nine buildings, stemming from more than 50 nominations, by Queen’s Park Picks, an annual ceremony organized by the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) that asks MPPs to select a favourite building from their riding.
The OAA then selects spaces to highlight from those nominations.
“The built environment has such a big influence on our daily lives, but many of us who aren’t in the design or construction world don’t always reflect on this,” said Settimo Vilardi, a Windsor-based architect who chairs the the Queen’s Park Picks jury.
“We want people to think about great examples of buildings, and why they like them so much.”
The MURC was nominated by York-Simcoe MPP Caroline Mulroney. In her nomination email, she called the development “the largest project in the history of the Town of Georgina” and praised the town for seeking extensive public consultation.
Vilardi explained that this year’s theme for the Queen’s Park Picks, “reshaping communities,” sought to highlight spaces that serve as important gathering spaces for the communities they belong to.
