Canada Signs Mutual Recognition Agreement with U.K.

The Regulatory Organizations of Architecture in Canada (ROAC), which includes the OAA, has signed a mutual recognition agreement (MRA) with the United Kingdom’s Architects Registration Board (ARB). The two parties now recognize U.K. and Canadian qualifications, making registration for eligible Architects easier.

The MRA is effective as of May 14, 2025, at which point ROAC certification will be administered by the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC), which will be coordinating subsequent licence applications for all ROAC jurisdictions. Learn more on the AIBC site.

The basic eligibility includes meeting education, experience, and examination requirements and being registered in good standing within one’s home jurisdiction. There are different requirements depending on if you are a Canadian Architect applying to practise in the United Kingdom, or a UK-registered Architect applying to Canada.

More information will be shared soon, but questions can be directed to registration@aibc.ca.
