Ontario Place, a futuristic megastructure built not just on the edge of Lake Ontario, but in it, opened to the public in 1971.
Designed by architect Eberhard Zeidler and landscape architect Michael Hough, Ontario Place is an archipelago of artificial islands sheltering a complex of five steel and glass pods suspended above a lagoon protected by a breakwater of deliberately grounded freighters. A triodetic dome known as the Cinesphere, which houses the world's first permanent IMAX theatre, appears to float nearby.
Ontario Place is a rare built example of some of the most radical design ideas that circulated in the 1960s. We will explore the site, focusing on its masterful integration of architecture and landscape, the changes it has undergone in its 50-year history, and the challenges it faces today.
In 2020, the World Monuments Fund included Ontario Place in its Watch Program, which calls attention to sites of great cultural heritage importance that are in need of urgent action.
