Spotlight on Sustainable Outcomes & Opportunities from IPD

This presentation provides attendees with inspiration and motivation through real project stories and tangible examples of how to apply Lean/collaborative principles to achieve sustainability and climate-related goals in any design and construction environment.

The experienced presenters will begin with an overview of integrated project delivery (IPD), followed by a deep dive that spotlights stories, sample tools, and outcomes from many sustainable IPD projects across Canada. The session concludes with an interactive workshop that helps attendees find opportunities to leverage the collaborative methods and strategies shared throughout the presentation, supporting advancement of their own sustainable project goals in any design or construction environment.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the basics of integrated project delivery (IPD) and Lean/collaborative framework: history, overview, and benefits.
2. Learn how many different IPD teams across Canada have leveraged Lean/collaborative tools and processes to develop, track, and achieve sustainable outcomes related to net zero, embodied carbon, Living Building Challenge, sustainable materials, and local/social procurement.
3. Learn how you and your organization can drive toward net zero carbon, and measuring/tracking embodied carbon within/across your organization.
4. Identify and takeaway specific methods for applying a Lean/collaborative framework to achieving sustainable outcomes within your design and construction projects.

Markku Allison, AIA (vice president [strategy & Innovation], Chandos Construction)

Markku Allison has more than 35 years of experience both as an award-winning designer and as a thought-leader on design and construction industry transformation. His background as a practice owner and industry subject matter expert with strong relationships across disciplines and organizations uniquely positions him to assist in shaping responsive strategies to forces driving change in business and culture today. In his current role, Markku heads up Chandos’ innovation initiatives. He is a past president of the Integrated Project Delivery Alliance in Canada and co-author of IPD: An Action Guide for Leaders. Markku also held positions at the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Jen Hancock, BA, BEd, LEED AP BD + C (vice president [collaborative construction], Chandos Construction

Jen Hancock has worked for Chandos for the last 14 years, and has helped lead many of the company’s innovative practices in that time. She works primarily as a coach and facilitator, focused on IPD, collaborative construction practices, Lean, and sustainability. She worked on some of the first IPD projects in Canada and has been a key champion in bringing it across the country from B.C. to Ontario. She was instrumental in setting up and managing Chandos’ waste diversion policy in 2010 that has seen the company divert more than 75 per cent of its waste in the last nine years.

Lindsay Worton, MA (IPD Coach, Chandos Construction)

Lindsay is an IPD Coach at Chandos Construction, with 16 years in the design and construction industry. At Chandos, she works across Canada to provide training, coaching, and facilitation to IPD and collaborative teams. Focusing her efforts on fostering positive relationships and improving team effectiveness, Lindsay helps individuals and teams maximize their performance in areas of communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and collaboration, while leveraging Lean tools and processes. Prior to joining Chandos, Lindsay worked for the City of Barrie as manager of facility planning and development, where she led several major capital initiatives to support growth in the City.
