Proper Masonry Detailing

1.5 ConEd Learning Hours

Hosted by Thames Valley Brick & Tile

This program provides insight into the Brick Industry requirements for detailing clay masonry correctly.

The focus of this discussion is water penetration management. We will take a very close look at the importance of flashing, weep holes, air space, moisture barriers, and various types of brick walls, as well as quality installation. It would be difficult to discuss proper detailing without including a discussion on movement control. Brick, by nature, only expands when most everything else in the building envelope expands and shrinks. This is a critical topic regarding moisture penetration management. We will present a brief discussion about corbelling, arches, reveals, combinations with other materials, etc. to understand how these architectural features only perform correctly if detailed properly. And in conclusion, we will work our way through a photo book of beautiful brick projects from across the country that are detailed properly resulting in a pleased owner and architect.

The format of the presentation is open for discussion with questions and comments welcome.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn about the industry standards and requirements for detailing clay masonry.
2. Understand water penetration management.
3. Learn about movement control.
4. Explore through a visual case study, best practices from coast to coast.
