This session offers a review of research on the merits of green and blue roofs, leading to the development of a decision tool to help designers make the most appropriate choice for a particular building type and location.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the significance of flat roof impacts on the urban environment.
2. Understand the relative merits of green versus blue roof systems.
3. Understand the use of green or blue roofs, along with other roof mitigation measures, depends on the size and type of building as well as its location.
4. Use a decision tool to make informed choices in selecting the most effective mitigation strategies.

Richard Hammond, OAA, MRAIC, ASHRAE, LEED AP(BD+C), GGP (principal, Cornerstone Architecture Incorporated)
Richard Hammond is founder and principal at Cornerstone Architecture in London, Ontario. In 2004, Richard became a LEED Accredited Professional and became a Green Globes Certified Professional in 2009. He has been involved with the design of numerous large projects certified under these rating systems. Seeking to further his understanding of emerging climate issues and initiatives, Richard received a Masters of Environment and Resource Studies from the University of Waterloo in 2017. His thesis focused on the impacts of buildings on the urban environment and the merits of green versus blue roof systems. His work was published in the Summer 2019 edition of High-Performing Buildings.
