Benchmarking Embodied Carbon in Ontario

This session presents research at the University of Toronto that is investigating the role of embodied carbon in construction. It also offers an overview of the ongoing benchmarking study underway with the City of Toronto.


Learning Objectives:

 
1. Understand life cycle assessment practices.
2. Learn how to incorporate environmental product declarations (EPDs) into practice.
3. Understand embodied carbon, and how to reduce it in the design process.
4. Understand the City of Toronto’s emerging benchmarking and embodied carbon reporting requirements.

Kelly Alvarez Doran, OAA (associate professor and associate director, University of Toronto/ White Arkitekter)


Kelly Doran is an associate director with White Arkitekter, an adjunct professor at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto, and the climate strategy lead at University College London’s Bartlett's Department of Landscape Architecture. Kelly's practice and research has focused on the embodied impacts of the built environment, and he has been recognized as a global leader in the climate-positive design. Prior to joining White, Kelly was a senior principal at MASS Design Group where he led its Rwanda office, overseeing the design and implementation of several MASS projects across East Africa.


Lisa King (senior environmental policy planner, City of Toronto)


Lisa King is a senior environmental policy planner for the City of Toronto’s City Planning Division's strategic initiatives policy and analysis section, practising in the areas of sustainable development, energy policy, and climate change. She leads new environmental policy agendas for the City Planning Division in efforts to ensure high-performance buildings and communities. Lisa is the staff lead for the Toronto Green Standard and Toronto's new zero emissions buildings framework. Her career spans 25 years in the areas of ecosystems planning and restoration, sustainable design of buildings, communities, and green infrastructure. Lisa completed her graduate work in environment and Community at Antioch University, Midwest.


Ryan Zizzo, MASc, P.Eng., LEED AP ND


Ryan Zizzo is a professional engineer with nearly 15 years of climate-smart construction project management experience across Canada and Europe. He creates and implements sustainability strategies that help clients understand, track, and reduce their environmental impacts and exposure to climate change risk. Focus areas include net-zero strategies, green building certifications, embodied carbon life cycle assessment, and climate resiliency. His past experience includes managing and certifying LEED green building projects across Canada, lecturing graduate courses on life cycle assessment at Finland’s largest technical university, and providing green building education seminars throughout Europe. Ryan holds engineering degrees from Queen’s University (BScEng) and the University of Toronto (MASc).
