The American architect and urban planner Daniel Burnham, who was famous for his master plan of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair said, “Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably will themselves not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die.”
In this presentation, Howard Rideout describes the creation of a master plan for a large wilderness park located 200 km southeast of Sudbury. At the core of this project is an approach to architecture and landscape that is both deeply personal, yet intimately tied to this spectacular location. In his design, the buildings, sculptural installations, and paths have been organized to allow hikers to develop an intimate connection to this landscape.
The presentation focuses on the drawings created to convey the conceptual ideas for the park. These drawings are interspersed with Howard’s photography of this wilderness, bringing participants on a visual journey throughout the landscape that he has envisioned. The images, many of which have won international awards, provide participants with a guide for how they can utilize hand drawing in their own design work to convey architectural ideas to clients, as well as to their fellow employees. More importantly, participants develop a deeper understanding of the wonders of the natural world that exists in and around Sudbury.
