Understanding the Fire Resistance of Roof and Wall Systems

TIME: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Fire safety is a central issue in building construction, particularly in densely populated areas where the spread of fire from one building to another can have catastrophic consequences. The fire resistance of roof and wall assemblies is essential to protect occupants, reduce damage to property and meet regulatory requirements. However, it can be difficult for professionals to make safe choices when navigating the existing ULC standards for roofs and walls and the test methods used.

This webinar, hosted by SOPREMA experts, explores the fundamental principles of testing the fire resistance of products and assemblies, as well as the key standards applicable to roof and wall systems. Our experts will guide you through the various test methods and standards, showing you how they interact and sharing best practices to ensure optimal protection and regulatory compliance.

By the end of this webinar, you will have a clear understanding of the ULC-S107, ULC-S126 and ULC-S134 fire resistance standards and will be better prepared to apply them in your construction projects!

Learning Objectives:

  • Exploring the current regulatory framework concerning the fire resistance of buildings
  • Differentiating the key fire resistance tests and understanding their specific features
  • Understanding the practical applications of the ULC-S107 and ULC-S126 standards for roof systems
  • Learning more about the ULC-S134 standard governing the fire resistance of wall assemblies and its implementation

About the Speakers:

Jean-François Côté, Ph.D.
Director, Standards and Scientific Affairs
Jean-François Côté holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from the Université de Sherbrooke and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) obtained in 1998.
He joined SOPREMA in 1999 as a chemist, where he worked on the development of adhesives and sealants used in construction and civil engineering. From 2009 to 2015, as Director of Strategic Development at SOPREMA, he coordinated the activities of the R&D, Technical and Marketing Departments of the company. In his current role, he represents SOPREMA on technical committees of industry associations (ARMA, PIMA, and CIMAC) and is actively engaged in various North American standards development organizations (CSA, ASTM, and ULC).
He is a registered chemist in the province of Québec with the OCQ, Vice-Chair of the ASTM D08 Committee on Roofing and Waterproofing, and Chair of the CSA A123 Technical Committee on Roofing Materials.

Léopold Giroux-Gauthier, Eng., M.Sc.A.
Building Envelope Technical Analyst
Léopold Giroux-Gauthier is a building engineer and member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (Québec Order of Engineers). After graduating from the Université de Sherbrooke in 2021 with a Bachelor of Building Engineering, his research for his master’s degree in applied sciences within the Canada Research Chair in Multiscale Building Physics took him into the world of research on digital modelling of urban microclimate. For over a year, he has been supporting SOPREMA representatives in the use of wall products in applications that comply with current regulations and maximize system performance.

Renaud Lizée, Eng.
Technical Support Manager
Renaud Lizée is a civil engineer with a degree from the Université de Sherbrooke. He joined SOPREMA in 2016 in the technical department and has been in charge of technical support since 2021. Recognized for his ability to explain complex issues in simple terms, Renaud has in-depth expertise in the standards of the National Building Code, materials and their installation methods. With nearly 10 years of experience within the company, he supports industry professionals in building ever more sustainable and efficient structures.
