The Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship’s Hybrid Timber Construction Micro-Certificate is a flexible 8-week online program that provides design professionals with an understanding of hybrid construction with structural components or systems engineered by combining wood and wood-based products with other materials, mainly steel or reinforced concrete.
This 8-week flexible online program is rooted in building examples, focusing on practical case studies of hybrid timber construction and making linkages among the analysis, design and construction methods.
Participants will gain knowledge about the following:
- engineered wood products, from material behaviour to hybrid timber construction
- the meaning of hybrid structures as a way for aesthetic and structural efficiency augmentation of hybrid buildings, including offsite fabrication of their components for faster build times
- how to include hybrid structural elements and systems in your design, referring to timber-steel, timber-concrete and timber-steel-concrete combinations
- how to account for element fabrication and prefabrication aspects to provide the design with an effective framework featuring connections and connection technologies for inducing enhanced performance to the structural system
- perform structural analysis and structural assembly detailing of hybrid multi-story buildings with particular reference to seismic actions
- design of timber-based composite components for long-span applications, including hybrid trusses, floors and bridges
