Terminology Tips to Respectfully Engage with Indigenous People

Time: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

In this two hour webinar, you will learn about the appropriate terminology to respectfully engage with Indigenous people in your personal and professional life. We will also provide some examples of common mistakes people make when referring to and engaging with Indigenous people. This webinar invites you to critically reflect about the importance of language, which can either hinder or support relationships with Indigenous communities.

The webinar is facilitated by the Indigenous Justice Division (IJD) of the Ministry of the Attorney General in partnership with the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs.

Learning Objectives

1) Understanding the difference between the following terms: 

  •  Indian, Aboriginal, Native & Indigenous
  • First Nations, Métis & Inuit
  • Band, Tribe & Tribal

2) Becoming aware of common mistakes around terminology 

3) Terminology tips to engage respectfully with Indigenous people.
    
4) Becoming aware of terms that deepen negative stereotypes  

Speaker (s):

Kaitlin Ritchie, Legal Counsel

Kaitlin Ritchie is a Legal Counsel at the Indigenous Justice Division for Ministry of the Attorney General (MAG). Kaitlin is a descendent of Chapleau Cree First Nation, Treaty 9 territory. Prior to joining IJD, Kaitlin was an associate at Olthuis Kleer Townshend LLP (“OKT Law”), a law firm representing Indigenous communities, governments, and organizations. While at OKT Law, Kaitlin had a diverse practice ranging from advising First Nations communities on internal governance matters, to areas of constitutional and Aboriginal law (including the duty to consult and accommodate), to treaty land entitlement and specific claims, and more. Kaitlin completed her J.D. at Osgoode Hall Law School, where she also completed the Intensive Program on Indigenous Lands, Resources, and Governments. Kaitlin also holds a M.A. in Political Science from York University, where she focused on the role of the courts in advancing Aboriginal (section 35) rights. 

Rolando Aguilera, Legal Counsel

Rolando Aguilera is a Legal Counsel at the Indigenous Justice Division for the Ministry of the Attorney General (MAG). Prior to graduate school, Rolando volunteered with an NGO working with Aymara and Quechua youth in the Andean high-plateau in Bolivia. While completing his J.D. at Osgoode Hall Law School, Rolando participated in an Intensive Program on Aboriginal Lands, Resources and Government, through Ratcliff & Company in Vancouver, where he worked on the implementation for the Maa-nulth Final Agreement between Canada, British Columbia, and five Maa-nulth First Nations. Rolando was also previously a civil litigator, with a focus on providing culturally-informed legal services for new Canadians.
