TSA Technical Series | Acoustics: Design

TIME: 12:00 PM-1:00 PM

About the session:
This is the first of a two-part webinar exploring acoustic design. Part 1 will focus on the design fundamentals, from transmission to absorption to frequently encountered issues.

Hearing is one of our five senses—the ways we gather information about the world around us. So while it may not always be top of mind, it stands to reason that how a space sounds can have a significant impact on how we perceive a room or building. Given we spend 90% of our time indoors, acoustic design is fundamental in designing successful spaces. But what really makes up Acoustics in Design, and how do the different parts come together? What’s the difference between STC and NRC? And between sound absorption and sound diffusion? What are the acoustic requirements of legislation such as the Ontario Building Code?

In the first of this two-part lecture series, Amanda Robinson and Nicholas Sylvestre-Williams from Aercoustics Engineering Limited will present the fundamentals of acoustic design and answer these common questions. This lecture will cover the differences between sound transmission and sound absorption, frequent issues that occur with acoustic design, and some key case studies that showcase acoustics in practice.

This lecture will be followed by TSA Tech Lecture | Acoustics: Construction, where the Aercoustics team will build upon the information from this session and outline some construction-specific pitfalls and issues that can arise on your sites, using real-life examples.

About the speakers:
Amanda Robinson is Vice President of Architecture at Aercoustics Engineering Limited, specialising in building and room acoustics. She is a professionally qualified mechanical engineer who has specialised in acoustics since graduating with honours from Adelaide University in 1996. Amanda has had extensive experience working with multidisciplinary practices in Canada, Australia, and the UK. Prior to joining Aercoustics in 2022, Amanda was Co-CEO at Marshall Day Acoustics (Melbourne), with shared responsibility for the Australasian business development and management. Amanda was the Secretary of the Victorian division of the Australian Acoustical Society for four years. Prior to that, she was Secretary for the Association of Noise Consultants in the UK. She has undertaken numerous presentations, including the Talking Spaces Symposium held by the University of Melbourne. She is part of the International WELL Sound Advisory Committee to assist in the next iteration of the WELL rating tool and is an accredited WELL Professional.

Nicholas Sylvestre-Williams, P.Eng., M.A.Sc., is a partner and owner of Aercoustics Engineering Ltd., an engineering consulting company specializing in acoustics, noise & vibration. Nicholas is an industry leader in residential acoustic design and has assisted in the research and development of North American acoustic standards. Nicholas is chair of the ANSI Working Group on Room Acoustics (S12.2) and has contributed engineering input to help develop new ASTM noise propagation and analysis standards. He has presented at many national and international conferences on acoustics and has taught acoustic theory and practice for various organizations, including instructing construction and design groups on OBC guideline changes. He has also appeared before the OMB as an expert witness for land-use development issues.
