Prospect Park, in Brooklyn, NY is Olmsted & Vaux’s second masterpiece following Central Park, and is on the US National Register of Historic Places. The Vale comprises eight acres in the heart of the northeast corner of Prospect Park and is topographically separated into two project sites: The Upper and Lower Vale. The project includes the historic restoration of the Children’s Pool in the Lower Vale, which reintroduces historic architectural elements while improving habitat for hundreds of species of birds that flock to this destination. The Upper Vale, a former children’s play area and subsequent rose garden with three disused concrete fountains, is transformed into three distinct landscapes that were conceived through an intensive community engagement process: a pollinator garden and planted arbor; a children’s nature exploration area; and a lawn with natural seating elements and small building built into the terrain with composting restrooms and a sheltered gathering space. The restored Vale will serve as a welcoming gathering place for the community, an essential woodland habitat for hundreds of species of wildlife, and an intergenerational space for all park lovers.

Svetlana Ragulina, RLA, ASLA, Director of Landscape Architecture & Preservation, Prospect Park Alliance
Svetlana is the Director of Landscape Architecture & Preservation at the Prospect Park Alliance in Brooklyn, NY. The Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the restoration, maintenance, and enhancement of Prospect Park—Brooklyn’s iconic, 526-acre landmark urban park—through a close partnership with the City of New York.
In her role, Svetlana leads a multidisciplinary team of landscape designers and construction supervisors, overseeing all capital landscape improvement projects throughout the park. She is deeply committed to preserving Prospect Park’s historic legacy while incorporating sustainable, forward-thinking design and ecological practices that serve the needs of a modern urban community.
Over the past decade with the Alliance, Svetlana has managed projects ranging widely in scope and scale. Highlights include the construction of a new formal park entrance, the restoration of the Vale of Cashmere and Grand Army Plaza, the Litchfield Villa Landscape Master Plan, and Lookout Hill forest restoration. She is currently leading the multi-phase 25-acre Prospect Park Lakeshore Restoration Project.
Svetlana’s work has been recognized with honors from the NYC Public Design Commission and the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission. She holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts in French and Art History from Rutgers College.
Amy Peck, Archivist/Historian, Prospect Park Alliance
Amy Peck is an expert on the physical and cultural history of Prospect Park, one of Frederick Law Olmsted’s best preserved urban parks. As the solo archivist, she is responsible for the preservation of and access to collections of historic images, documents, architectural drawings and other material related to the design and ongoing restoration of Prospect Park.
She participates in public speaking engagements and webinars, and leads tours for staff, visitors, funders and community partners. In 2022-2023 she guided the landscape architects responsible for planning the restoration of the 26-acre Vale project, providing detailed historic timelines, images and primary source research.
