Place, Culture, Climate: A Northern Boardwalk Story

Located in the subarctic town of Kawawachikamach, the Naskapi Community Boardwalk is a multi-phase project providing a community with an accessible boardwalk along the undulating shores of two Lakes.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Collaborative Design with Indigenous Communities
  2. Identify strategies for designing resilient infrastructure in remote northern environments
  3. Integration of cultural narratives into architectural and landscape design
  4. Strategies for remote site analysis, design techniques and construction methods

Presenters:

Sophie Beaudoin, B. Landscape Architecture, AAPQ, FCSLA, Co-President, Senior Landscape Architect
As CCxA co-president and partner, Sophie is a tenacious city-builder of transformative signature landscape projects. With over 30 years of professional experience, she directs major CCxA projects across Canada. Her projects as partner-in-charge include the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach Community Boardwalk in Kawawachikamach (QC), Dorchester Square & Place du Canada, The Ring and Place d’Youville in Montreal; the esplanade for the Canadian Museum of History and the competition-winning National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa; and the landscape plan at the heart of a new “city from scratch” in Vaughan. Sophie joined CCxA’s predecessor studio Claude Cormier + Associes in 2003 as one of founder Claude Cormier’s first employees, becoming a CCxA partner in 2011 and co-president in 2022.

Shaina Coulter is a Junior Landscape Designer and a trained Architect. Her professional experience has allowed her to work, study, and design in a variety of environments around the world, helping her learn about and connect with new landscapes and local communities. Shaina’s priority is to address the causes and effects of the climate crisis and she strives to create resiliency in communities with landscape infrastructure and design. Shaina’s enthusiasm and passion for her work contributes to her work diligence and her ability to be an exceptional team member.

Licensed OAA Members: $42 + HST
OAA Interns and Students: $32 + HST
Non-Members: $62 + HST
