Description
In building design the role of wind engineers is understood and the triggers for wind tunnel testing well established. Less well known, but perhaps of greater value is the utility of wind engineering methods for urban renewal projects.
The Mickey Leland Federal Building is a 22-storey office tower in downtown Houston, built in the 1980s. Purchased in 2009, the GSA wanted to update the structure with a revised building skin. The new skin increased the sail area of the building, attracting additional wind load. A then-novel performance-based wind design framework was developed by Walter P. Moore with RWDI to allow the building strength to be evaluated using non-linear analyses. Approximately 1,500 tons of concrete, 175 tons of reinforcing steel, and 350 tons of cradle-to-grave CO2 emissions were saved by analyzing the building using this framework.
The 34-storey Centre Point Tower in London, UK, built in 1966, infamously sat empty for almost a decade. Office buildings and residential towers have different performance criteria with respect to building motion, and in 2012 RWDI was engaged to monitor the full-scale wind-induced motions of the tower to review the performance against modern residential motion criteria. Centre Point was retrofitted to residential occupancy in 2015.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the expanded role of wind engineering beyond new construction, including its application in urban renewal and building retrofits.
- Analyze performance-based wind design strategies that enable safe and efficient structural modifications while reducing material use and carbon footprint.
- Evaluate real-world case studies to understand how wind-induced loads and motion criteria influence the retrofitting of office and residential towers.
- Apply best practices for integrating wind engineering into urban renewal projects, balancing occupant comfort, structural safety, and sustainability goals.
Presenters:
John Kilpatrick, Wind Engineering Practice Leader and Principal, RWDI
John Kilpatrick, Ph.D., P.Eng., C.Eng., F.ICE, M.ASCE is the former Wind Engineering Practice Leader at RWDI and is a Principal of the firm. John began his journey in Wind Engineering at the University of Western Ontario, completing a Master’s degree in 1996, studying the influence of wind-induced motions on the performance of tall buildings. On graduation John embarked on a career at RWDI, working on variety of wind tunnel investigations including the Stade Olympique in Montreal, the Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan, and the new parallel crossing at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
John began a PhD at The University of Western Ontario in 2000, where he participated in the Chicago Tall Buildings Project. The research was a pioneering study that monitored full-scale wind-induced responses of Chicago skyscrapers to validate and refine wind tunnel and structural design modeling. The paper “Validating Wind-Induced Response of Tall Buildings: Synopsis of the Chicago Full-Scale Monitoring Program” was recipient of the ASCE’s 2008 State-of-the-Art in Civil Engineering Award, presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers award.
During his now 30+ years at RWDI, John has earned a reputation as an insightful wind engineer who delivers clarity and value for clients. John is a member of the following technical committees: ASCE 49 Task Committee on Wind Tunnel Testing for Buildings and Other Structures; Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Pre-Standard for Performance-Based Design for Wind; ASCE Tall Buildings task committee - Design and Performance of Tall Buildings for Wind; and the ASCE 7-28 Wind Loads Sub-Committee. In addition to his current role as Senior Technical Director at RWDI, John is an Adjunct Professor at Western University.
