The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) and the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) created the Resilient Homes Task Force (RHTF) to increase capacity of the insurance and home building industries to implement resilience practices in new homes and renovations. As climate disruptions increase in frequency and severity, resources and approaches developed through the collaboration are meant to expedite application of practical resilience measures.
The RHTF initiative prioritizes scalable, constructible, and cost-effective resilience options for low-rise residential construction in Canada. ICLR/CHBA are implementing field trials with builders in multiple Canadian regions to help evaluate practicality, availability, and cost for resilience measures for basement/urban flooding, wildfire, hail, and high wind. ICLR also helps manage the PIEVC Program, which provides step-by-step guidance to understand and integrate climate change resilience into engineered assets, including buildings.
Dan Sandink will discuss both the RHTF and PIEVC programs, providing practical guidance on climate resilience and potential insurance implications associated with implementation of resilience measures.
