Description
This session demonstrates how smarter design and Canadian clean materials cut embodied carbon without raising costs. Drawing on our joint work as well as Ha/f case studies on office construction, single-stair housing, and retrofit scenarios, it presents quantified cost-carbon tradeoffs, procurement levers, and replicable tactics teams can implement across programs, portfolios, and public projects.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to quantify cost and embodied-carbon impacts from key material swaps using provided Canadian benchmarks.
- Participants will be able to compare design strategies (e.g., single-stair, parking shifts, efficient structural grids) for their carbon and budget effects.
- Participants will be able to apply a simple decision framework to select low-carbon, cost-competitive materials for upcoming projects.
- At the completion of this, participants will understand how to specify procurement and policy levers (Buy Clean, EPD requirements) that enable low-cost, low-carbon delivery.
Presenters:
Ryan Bruer, Co-Founder & Partner, Ha/f Climate Design
Ryan is an architect and artist passionate about communal stories that connect people to materials and city-building. His work is informed by his art practice which explored printmaking through material circularity, local repair, and exchange in Hamilton. This context reveals the social and environmental impact and opportunity of building, a perspective Ryan brings to project design strategy. Ryan oversees creative pursuits and research, specializing in thoughtful design and technical rigor. He has extensive experience with feasibility studies and residential design. As a co-founder of Ha/f, he has advanced life cycle assessment in architectural offices across Canada to drive immediate carbon reduction in residential construction. Ryan also leads the Ha/f Research Seminar at the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture.
Jana Elbrecht, Senior Policy Advisory, Clean Energy Canada
Jana Elbrecht is a senior policy advisor with Clean Energy Canada, where she works on policy solutions to help empower households, accelerate the energy transition and build a thriving and sustainable Canadian economy.
She has been working on embodied carbon and buy clean policies for close to three years, bringing together changemakers in the sector, advising governments and authoring reports including, most recently, Building Toward Low Cost and Carbon.
Jana holds a master’s degree in International Affairs and was previously a climate policy consultant in Berlin and an advocate for ambitious climate policy internationally.
