Leading the Public Realm Design: Insights from Brightwater

Session Abstract:

The development of a 72-acre former brownfield – Brightwater is envisioned to be a walkable 21st Century village bolstered by a hierarchy of public realm spaces. As Masterplan Architect & Urban Designer, Giannone Petricone leads a complex team to transform the site into a complete and vibrant waterfront community. Participants will gain insights on the complexities of designing large sites, and how architects play the vital role in shaping exceptional public realm design.

 About the Speaker:

Leo Lin, OAA, Principal | Giannone Petricone Associates

An indispensable member of the GPA team, Leo has a proven commitment to excellence in project design and execution. Joining GPA in 2014 as Project Architect/Intermediate Designer, he became Principal in 2022. Holding an undergraduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning, specializing in urban design, from the University of Waterloo and a Master of Architecture from the University of Toronto, Leo’s unique background in both urban design and architecture brings lateral and creative insight to all aspects of the design process. 

His vision for creating curated and joyful experiences through architecture and urban design has been infused into numerous GPA projects including Daniels Waterfront City of the Arts, Golden Mile Redevelopment, and Brightwater Master Plan. Leo brings his exquisite attention to detail and problem-solving skills to many of GPA’s premier building design projects such as 771 Yonge Street, 321 Davenport, and the Snider House restoration. 
As Principal, Leo brings his expertise to the studio by championing a roster of projects at all scales, assuring the superior quality and success of designs, while providing mentorship to foster the next generation of talented architects and designers in the studio. An active member of the design community beyond GPA, he has taught as a sessional lecturer for design studios at the University of Toronto, and has served as a panelist on the Design Review Panel for the City of London. Additionally, Leo is a frequent guest critic at various design institutions including the University of Waterloo, the University of Toronto, and OCAD University.

OAA Interns: $32 + HST
Non-Members: $62 + HST
