For more than a decade, Canadian architects have navigated what Lee and Rotterdam (2016) identify as the "one person, two-hat dilemma," a role conflict rooted in traditional procurement models that require architects to act simultaneously as design professionals and impartial contract administrators (RAIC 2019). This dual role has contributed to adversarial project cultures, fragmented communication, and heightened professional risk (Ashcraft 2014). As collaborative project delivery models gain momentum, Alberta has emerged as Canada's most advanced ecosystem for Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), supported by nearly 15 years of practice and 55 of the 141 documented IPD projects reported nationally in 2025 (IPDA 2025). This early adoption, reinforced by sustained provincial commitment, demonstrates how IPD can reduce disputes, strengthen design coordination, and support more integrated professional roles, offering a practical pathway for resolving the architect's longstanding "two-hat dilemma" (IPDA 2022). Drawing on this provincial leadership, the presentation analyses how IPD restructures contractual relationships, aligns incentives, and integrates interdisciplinary teams in ways that directly address the role conflict at the heart of traditional practice (AIA 2014; Kent & Becerik Gerber 2010).

Anine Eschberger Wortmann is a Calgary‑based Architect registered with the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA). She brings more than 15 years of experience leading complex public and private sector projects across Canada. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Consulting Architects of Alberta (CAA), contributes to the CAA Procurement and Contracts Committee, and is a member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC)’s national Fees and Procurement Working Group.
With dual professional master’s degrees in Architecture and Construction Project Management, she brings a practice‑grounded, evidence‑based perspective to the future of architectural procurement. Her work focuses on elevating professional value within fee structures, strengthening collaborative project delivery models, and advancing procurement frameworks that safeguard design integrity.
