Egress vs Exit: What is the difference and how to apply the OBC requirements

In this session, we will evaluate the OBC requirements for egress and exit systems. You will learn how to apply the requirements of OBC Sections 3.3 and 3.4. regarding means of egress, travel distance, dead-end corridor conditions, egress and exit widths, and door hardware. 

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the difference between egress and exit systems
  2. Learn how to apply travel distance requirements
  3. Learn how to determine the number of egress and exit doors (egress/exit capacity) 
  4. Learn how dead-end corridors and door hardware can influence egress requirements.

Presenters: 

Megan Nicoletti, Partner, CodeNext Inc.
Megan has extensive experience with Building Code and Fire Code reviews for architects, engineers, designers, developers, and building owners. She is proficient in all scales of commercial, residential, infrastructure, transit and public sector projects, both in Canada and internationally. Megan is also an active participant in the development of numerous fire and life safety standards through UL and is a regular speaker at industry events and conferences.
