Creativity, Compliance, and Commitment for Achieving Positive Building Envelope and Sustainability Outcomes

TIME: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Description

This session will cover building science fundamentals for architects and architectural design, including air tightness, thermal performance, vapour control, stack effect, and comfort. We will discuss typical ways enclosure consultants engage on projects to support design creativity and successful project execution, while achieving compliance with Pro-Demnity Insurance requirements when using window wall, precast cladding, and insulated metal cladding systems. We will also discuss the benefits of collaboration between architecture, building envelope, and sustainability to meet current energy and carbon targets.

Learning Objectives

  1. Develop a deeper understanding of key considerations for building envelope design including thermal performance and thermal bridging, air tightness,  and durability
  2. Explore the integration of building envelope design and sustainability targets, including how enclosures are represented in energy modelling.
  3. Discuss various energy and carbon standards across Ontario code and municipal frameworks.
  4. Understand Pro-Demnity Insurance requirements and how this affects your designs for buildings incorporating window wall, precast cladding, and insulated metal panels.

Presenters:

Scott Armstrong, Senior Associate, Building Envelope and Sustainability, Entuitive
Scott is passionate about buildings – their design and construction, ongoing performance, deterioration, failure, and renewal. Scott has nearly 30 years’ experience in building enclosures and facades, sustainability and low-carbon buildings, deep retrofits and decarbonization, existing building repair and renewal, heritage building assessment and restoration, roofing and vegetated green roofs, and integrated design practices. His projects have spanned commercial, institutional, health care, heritage, recreational, residential, industrial, and neighbourhood development in Canada, Bermuda, and the Middle East.

A LEED Accredited Professional, Building Science Specialist (BSS), and Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Scott successfully bridges the traditional gap between Architectural and Engineering disciplines. Scott is frequently invited to speak on topics such as enclosure design, high performance building design, decarbonization, and existing building retrofits.
