TIME: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Session Abstract:
Additive construction (AC), also known as 3D Printing of Concrete, is a disruptive technology that is redefining the way architects and engineers think about architecture, structures, and creativity in the built environment.
This session will cover the foundations of AC but will also feature a case study CONCAVE, my team’s award-winning project (third place) in ICON Initiative 99 Competition, a duplex which will be built at Community First! Village in Austin, Texas for only USD 99K.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about 3D Printing of Concrete technology and processes.
- Learn about limitations and challenges of additive construction.
- Learn how AC can unlock creativity in architecture and engineering.
- ConCave as Case Study. An award winning project in I99 Competition.
About the Speaker:
Tara Bisharat, licensed architect (OAA), entrepreneur, and robotic/automated construction expert with a Master’s degree in Space Architecture
Tara is a licensed architect (OAA), entrepreneur, and robotic/automated construction expert with a Master’s degree in Space Architecture, specializing in designing for extreme and extraterrestrial environments. With over 10 years of experience in architectural design and construction across various project types and scales, she focuses on additive construction for Earth and beyond. Her expertise spans human-centered design, systems engineering, mission planning and analysis, and In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU).
She is the founder of Tara Bisharat Inc., a design studio dedicated to innovative and robotic construction, offering architectural design, research, and consultation services for firms looking to integrate robotic construction technologies. She is also the co-founder of StrataPrint, a company leveraging additive construction (3D concrete printing) to create sustainable, high-quality, and affordable designs at speed.
Tara led a team of 10 to an honorable mention in the first phase of ICON’s Initiative 99 competition with Concave, a winning design that went on to secure third place in the second phase. The competition challenges designers to address the global housing crisis by creating homes that can be built for $99,000 or less using ICON’s 3D-printed construction technology. Concave will be constructed in Austin, Texas, in Spring/Summer 2025.
She is an active member of the Space Architecture Technical Committee at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), a member of SpaceArchitect.org, and a contributor to ASTM Committee F42 for Additive Manufacturing Technologies.
Tara is also the host and executive producer of AIAA SATC’s podcast From the Outpost, as well as a contributor to and host on Mars TV, where she engages experts in architecture, science, space, AI, and technology. She frequently submits research papers, speaks, and delivers lectures at international conferences
