Description
We all know that the built environment is a major ongoing contributor to the climate crisis. As a whole, the design and construction industry has spent decades elevating knowledge about sustainable design, developing design and delivery processes, and building prototypes, but we are challenged to make this change faster and more widespread.
Practitioners–and even large firms–have very little time and resources to tackle these challenges individually. Many of us are left waiting for regulatory change and for clients’ directions to change…and left waiting in vain. But there are ways to combine efforts, to engage others in the industry, and to act with the agency that we have right now.
This seminar will focus on several examples, including the Toronto BioBuild Collective’s “Biomaterial Assembly Mock-up” collaborative research project and other initiatives that gather energy around circularity, urban agriculture, community-level adaptation and even the development of natural stone construction. Alex Lukachko, from the Climate Design Initiative and the Daniels Faculty at U of T, will talk about these partnerships in action. And show you how you can be involved.

Alex Lukachko, Assistant Professor, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto; Director, Climate Design Initiative
Alex Lukachko is a building science consultant and climate change adaptation specialist, who has worked on high performance, low carbon buildings and building materials with clients in many parts Canada and the United States, including building material manufacturers, developers, constructors, and design firms. He is currently working with architecture firms to help them change their design and construction practice to address the climate crisis. Alex teaches the integration of energy, building science and design concepts in the architecture programs at the University of Toronto. He has active research interests in the development of future building enclosure systems and the design of high-performance, low-environmental-impact buildings. In particular, he is interested in the link between architectural design and quality assurance that ensures high building performance. These interests are part of a long-term pursuit of effective (and measurable) sustainable building practices.
