Collaboration for Circular Construction and Reuse

TIME: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Description

Circular construction requires industry-wide collaboration to overcome barriers to material reuse. This session highlights the partnership between Green Salvaged Materials (GSM) and the Grand Valley Construction Association (GVCA) in building the ReUse Collective—a system to support contractors, designers, and owners in salvaging, redistributing, and reintegrating materials. Attendees will learn how collaborative models are transforming waste into resource while reducing carbon, costs, and risk.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize barriers and opportunities for material reuse in construction.
  2. Explore collaborative frameworks that enable circular construction.
  3. Identify how associations and designers shape reuse adoption.
  4. Apply tools and strategies to integrate reuse in projects.

Presenters:

Carly Connor, Founder & CEO, Green Salvaged Materials (GSM)
Carly Connor, P.Eng., is the Founder & CEO of Green Salvaged Materials (GSM), a Canadian company building the operating system for circular construction. With a background in structural engineering and restoration, Carly works at the intersection of material performance, procurement systems, and climate action — translating circular economy principles into practical tools for project teams.

Through GSM and the ReUse Collective, she convenes architects, engineers, owners, contractors, and manufacturers to embed material reuse into real project workflows. Her work spans pre-demolition audits, capture of surplus new-construction materials, development of industry protocols, and creation of trusted supply pathways that allow materials to move reliably from one project to the next. GSM’s platform supports material visibility, waste tracking in the trades, and carbon quantification — helping teams reduce embodied carbon, cut landfill waste, and unlock cost savings.

Carly’s focus is scaling reuse beyond one-off salvage efforts to a coordinated, industry-wide system that supports specification, risk management, and performance verification. She works with municipalities, construction associations, and private sector leaders to standardize practices and accelerate market adoption.

At OAA, Carly brings an engineering lens to how architects can operationalize circularity — leveraging existing and surplus materials as viable, specifiable resources that strengthen supply chain resilience while advancing measurable climate outcome.
