Building Inclusivity: Understanding and Supporting Gender and Sexual Diversity in Architecture

Session Abstract:
Join the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada for a thought-provoking virtual workshop that explores the intersection of architecture and 2SLGBTQI+ inclusivity.   Explore strategies for cultivating an inclusive and supportive work environment for individuals of diverse backgrounds and celebrate their invaluable contributions and accomplishments by fostering spaces that nurture a sense of belonging and solidarity for all, not just during Pride Month but all year long.  Engage with experts, share insights, and learn how to create environments that celebrate diversity and promote equality.

 

About the speaker:

Laurie VandeSchoot       
Deputy Chief Laurie VandeSchoot, MSc (Retired) builds inclusive and high-performing cultures that strengthen communities. An executive-level change agent in   municipal government / fire services (32 years) and international development (25 years), Laurie is the lead consultant for NDRI-USA and serves her local volunteer fire department as the Assistant Chief.  She holds several interdisciplinary degrees, including a Sustainable Development MSc, and leads international  programs on diversity, executive leadership, and human relations.



Learning Outcomes:

Gain a comprehensive understanding of terminology, definitions, and the spectrum of gender and sexual diversity, and how they relate to our communities and workplaces

Explore strategies for creating inclusive work cultures within architectural spaces, emphasizing the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and support for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including 2SLGBTQI+ individuals.

Analyze the impact of workplace experiences on the health and well-being of 2SLGBTQI+ individuals, drawing from current research findings and real-world examples to highlight the significance of creating affirming environments

Develop actionable steps for promoting equality and inclusivity within architectural practices and organizations, empowering participants to become advocates for positive change and allies to 2SLGBTQI+ communities.
