Description
Thermal bridges in buildings that have been typically underestimated or even overlooked during energy simulations, resulting in overestimating building thermal performance. There are simple tools available that can greatly increase the accuracy of energy performance calculations.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the nature of thermal bridges and the serious detriment they can have on building energy performance.
- Understand the linear transmittance approach used during 3D modeling to include the effects of three-dimensional heat loss
- Learn the importance of improving thermal performance of building envelope assemblies during the design phase, to reduce the chance that an expensive, or sometimes impractical change will be required.
- Watch a demonstration of the freely available Thermal Envelope software to see how simple it can be to include realistic thermal performance criteria into building energy use calculations.
Presenters:
Peter Adams, P.Eng., Senior Building Science Engineer, Stantec
Peter Adams is a Senior Building Science Engineer at Stantec with over 30 years of experience with building science and building envelopes. A graduate of mechanical engineer, Peter has conducted work on hundreds of buildings including forensic studies on building performance problems, building envelope failures, and building design. Peter also has extensive experience with indoor environment studies. His work has included many buildings with challenging building envelopes and operating conditions, including libraries, natatoriums, water treatment plants, and sporting venues. Peter frequently presents at industry events, has taught building science and related topics at the university level, and is active on several industry technical committees.
