Description
This session is designed to provide a general overview of all aspects of threats posed by architectural design in the urban landscape to birds. It will explore strategies for bird-friendly design—new and retrofit—low- and high-rise. Focus will be on optimizing community and environmental responsibilities through bird-friendly planning, design and management with the two-fold goal of human-avian benefit, and inspiring design for future generations. It will touch on bird-friendly guidelines and green standards, as well as current and proposed legislation that impacts design, property and reputation.
Learning Objectives
- Understand why birds matter to human and environmental health, economies and ecosystems.
- Be knowledgeable about the perils of daytime and nighttime reflective light to birds.
- Be knowledgeable about protection for birds federally, provincially and mitigating non-compliance to legislation.
- Be knowledgeable about solutions to reduce bird-building collision threats.

Mauro Carreño is an award-winning Architect with extensive design/construction experience. He is a leading expert in bird-friendly design, advising the City of Toronto on Green Development Standards and collision deterrence. Carreño was instrumental in establishing the national CSA Standard A460:19 (Bird-friendly building design) and currently serves on the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) Canada Board of Directors and Technical Committee, promoting bird safe architecture nationwide.
Brendon Samuels, Research Associate, Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) Canada
Brendon Samuels is a research associate with the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) Canada. He is completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Toronto Metropolitan University with the Ecological Design Lab. Brendon’s doctoral research focused on strategies for mitigating bird-glass collisions, understanding the relevance of avian visual biology to designing markers on glass, and situating design interventions in public policy.
