Get to Know a Current Councillor - Susan Speigel

OAA Council serves as the board of directors for the Ontario Association of Architects. With election season kicking off later this fall, the OAA asked Councillors what made them want to run in the first place.

Susan Speigel is a Toronto Architect, educator, and past President of the OAA. Currently a Vice President of the Association and the Chair of the Communications and Public Education Committee (CPEC), she holds a City of Toronto seat on Council.

1. Why did you first decide to run for Council?

Honestly, I’m not sure I ever “decided!” At the RAIC Conference in Saint John, where I was made a Fellow, I had inspiring conversations with the OAA’s then-President Katie Kurtin and was energized by the work of BEAT (Building Equality in Architecture Toronto). When I heard no one was running in Toronto, I felt obliged to step up. It felt like happenstance—but also a chance to give back after years of being connected to the OAA.

2. What do you enjoy or appreciate about the experience?

Three things stand out:

1. The people—I’ve loved working with such thoughtful, intelligent colleagues and staff.

2. The impact—policy development from the top down is powerful. It’s a way to shape our profession and the world we work in.

3. The future—I want the OAA to welcome younger architects. With AI, climate change, and shifting approaches to life and work, their voices are essential.

I love it! The collegiality of Council, staff, and our partners is inspiring. It keeps me connected to the bigger picture of architecture—policy, regulation, and leadership beyond daily practice.

3. What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a nomination for the very first time?

Some people have asked me about the time commitment of being on Council. It’s Intense—but worth it. I joined multiple Committees to get a full picture of Council’s work, which makes it a challenge to balance with practice. But I thrive on challenge. I see it as part of my “thinking life”—I learn as much as I give.

For those of you thinking about it right now: the OAA and your profession need more committed Councillors. People who are intelligent, engaged, and willing to give their time. Too few apply, often not realizing how much the role connects you to government, policy, and the pulse of the profession.

This year, there are five seats for Architects and one seat for a Licensed Technologist to join Council and guide the Association in regulating the practice of architecture to protect the public interest. To learn more about running or the general processes, visit the Council Elections page
