The Double Duplex was created in response to the city’s growing need for alternative housing models due to the rising cost of urban real estate and the need for urban densification within Toronto’s sought-after historic residential neighbourhoods. Each 3500-square-foot duplex residence consists of two-storey lower and upper units, allowing property owners to rent out one of the units, use it as a live/work space or for multi-generational living. Located in one of Toronto’s most notable historic residential neighbourhoods, Double Duplex addresses how to translate the context’s notion of 19th century craft via a two-storey brise-il referencing a public art installation.
