Job Description

AECOM Buildings + Places Architectural team is seeking a Deputy Project Director - Above and Underground Subway Stations Architectural and Engineering to join our team. This position can be based out of Markham or Mississauga, ON with opportunities for hybrid work.

AECOM Buildings + Places Canada (B+P Canada) is a vibrant and growing fully integrated team spanning architecture, all the building’s engineering disciplines, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, economics and asset management for design and infrastructure projects. Project assignments may include, although not limited to: Transit and Municipal, Commercial, and Institutional projects, Justice, Education and Government.

Job Summary: 

We are seeking a highly experienced transit architect or structural engineer with a robust background in above and underground subway station design, owner’s engineering or technical advisory, LEAN design and construction methods, and experience in Progressive Design Build (PDB) or Design-Build (DB). The ideal candidate will participate in working groups on behalf of the owner to review, discuss, and contribute to design decisions.

Major Responsibilities:

Owner's Engineering Leadership:

Oversee the review of design deliverables, ensuring compliance with owner requirements, industry standards, and regulatory guidelines.
Provide valuable insights and recommendations, particularly in the context of underground subway station design.

Design Compliance Review:

Review design documents for compliance standards, safety regulations, and owner specifications.
Implement and manage quality control measures to ensure accuracy and completeness of design deliverables.

RFI Coordination:

Coordinate responses to RFIs, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
Incorporate RFI responses into the design process while maintaining compliance with project requirements.

Shop Drawing Reviews:

Review Shop Drawings for alignment with project specifications and design requirements.
Facilitate timely review and approval of Shop Drawings.
Progressive Design Build (PDB) or Design-Build (DB):

Enhance design and construction efficiency through PDB or DB methodologies.
Collaborate with project teams in implementing PDB or DB approaches.
LEAN Design and Construction Methods:

Utilize LEAN principles to optimize project workflows, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency.
Active Participation in Working Groups:

Represent the owner in working groups, contributing to design decisions.
Ensure alignment with owner objectives and project goals.
Project-Specific Output Specification and Design Manual:

Develop project-specific output and performance specifications, and design manuals.
Ensure design processes align with established specifications.
Collaborative Leadership for Subway Station Projects:

Lead the design team to align with engineering excellence, project specifications, compliance requirements, and LEAN principles.
Foster a collaborative environment integrating compliance considerations and innovative project delivery approaches.

Project Management for Underground Infrastructure:

Manage the design process for underground subway stations, ensuring compliance with owner expectations and regulatory requirements.
Address unique challenges associated with underground design and ensure timely project delivery.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

In order to be considered for this position, candidates must possess, at a very minimum: 

No less than a Bachelor's Degree in Architectural and/or Structural engineering plus 8 (eight) years of experience in transit-related design, engineering, and design management.

Preferred Requirements:

Master’s degree in architectural and/or structural engineering.
Fifteen (15) + years of experience in transit-related design, engineering, and design management. 
In-depth knowledge of compliance standards and regulations related to underground infrastructure and subway station design.
Proven experience in a senior management/technical advisory role within a multi-disciplinary or owner's engineering environment.
Experience in preparing project-specific output specifications, performance specifications, and design manuals.
Familiarity with LEAN design and construction methods is considered an asset.
Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate compliance requirements, PDB/DB principles, and LEAN concepts to the design team.

Salary Range$95,000.00 - $140,000.00
