OBC: New 5 and 6 Storey Wood Construction

Course Outline

This technical presentation will review the new OBC provisions which permit 5 and 6 storey wood construction. The background to these new Code provisions will be presented to understand the objectives of this significant Code change. Key Code provisions will be reviewed and analysed to understand the options, limitations, and conditions associated with these new provisions.  Key design details will reviewed to understand the complexity of the design and to understand the design solutions that can address these requirements.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Know and understand that new OBC provisions for 5 and 6 storey wood construction.
  2. Understand the background to the change and the industry objectives.
  3. Know and understand the Code limitations and conditions associated with the new provisions.
  4. Understand how to address design details integral to the new provisions.


Speakers:

Judy Jeske is a Principal, Director of the Code and Life Safety Group and Senior Code Specialist at Morrison Hershfield.  Judy was the PM and Senior Code Specialist for the development of the recent Ontario WoodWorks 2015 Reference Guide “Mid-Rise Wood Construction in the Ontario Building Code” and has presented throughout Ontario on this topic.  Judy works closely with design teams and Authorities Having Jurisdiction and has extensive experience in application of Codes and standards for new construction and renovations, fire risk assessment, fire protection system design and emergency management planning.  She has more than 28 years of experience in fire protection engineering and the application of codes and standards.  Judy provides creative solutions to the application of building and fire codes and to integrate fire and life safety standards for the design and construction of new buildings and renovations to existing buildings, without compromising the intent of the Codes or principles of fire and life safety.
