Program:
What gets Architects into trouble most often? Pro-Demnity recently commissioned two separate reviews of past claims, in order to quantify recurring themes, and to characterize recent developments in the Standard of Care expected of Ontario practitioners.

The first part of the program will focus on a review of all claims that arose during a recent 5-year period. We'll look at the areas of practice that have proven costliest to our Insurer - water ingress and the construction phase - and discuss ways for practices to protect themselves. Our analysis of the impact of specialist consultants (non-Engineers and Engineers alike) will highlight the "usual suspects", and quantify their involvement in claims. We'll also discuss particular aspects of practice that vary with building type, and discuss how these relate to the allegations others make about Architects. Reference will be made to key documents - existing and new - that practitioners may use to manage their risks.

As a complement to this overview of claims, the program will continue with a look at Pro-Demnity's claims experience with Exterior Insulation Finish Systems (EIFS). We'll highlight several very recent developments initiated by the EIFS industry, and discuss their potential impact on architectural practice. Reference will be made to Pro-Demnity's Non-Drained Exterior Wall Exclusion, as well as emerging standards and Code requirements.

While this program presents a significant amount of new information, it also invites the active participation of attendees - through a series of short individual exercises that can be taken back to the office for use in future practice.
