Back to the Basics: A Review of the Pro-Demnity Insurance Program & Elliot Lake Mall Inquiry

Program:

The first part of the program will provide a review of the features of the Ontario architects' professional liability insurance and Pro-Demnity Insurance Company Policy No 1 (Mandatory Insurance) including the standard Endorsements that apply. Reference will also be made to a number of the significant differences in coverage under Policy No 4. (Increased Limits). 

Common factors giving rise to claims will be a part of the discussion. 

As a complement to the discussion about the Policy content, the program will also include a review of the circumstances that led to the Elliot Lake Mall collapse in June 2012 and the findings and conclusions of the Commission of Inquiry that was called to  determine the causes of the collapse and make recommendations to avoid a similar catastrophe in the future.   

The Elliot Lake Mall presentation will include discussion of the ensuing litigation involving architects and the assistance provided by their professional liability insurance.

Con-Ed Points: 

Attendance at the event will qualify for 3 to 3½ hours of Structured Learning. Pro-Demnity will arrange to provide the necessary certificate of attendance after the event.

John C.A. Hackett OAA, FRAIC

John Hackett is Vice-President, Practice Risk Management for Pro-Demnity Insurance Company. In that role he counsels Ontario architects on questions about insurance and liability concerns. He serves as moderator for many Pro-Demnity Loss Prevention Events.

Prior to assuming his position with Pro-Demnity in 2004, he practiced for 35 years with an Ontario architectural practice that focused on publicly funded institutional projects. 

He is a Fellow of the RAIC, is a licenced architect in Ontario and at various times was licenced to practice architecture in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

He has just completed a ten year term as a member of the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes, the organization responsible for oversight of the National Building Code.
