Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

Our Design Division in Planning and Development is seeking one (1) Design Specialist to join our cross-functional team. 

The Design Specialist will be part of the Station and Facility Design Management team and support the single option development of design for stations and facilities for all transit modes (heavy rail, subways, LRT, BRT, bus, and transit oriented communities (TOC)) through the management of design, from project concept design through approvals and external stakeholder negotiations, with input into deliverables to ensure design objectives are consistently integrated, on a project by project basis, and aligned with corporate mandates and directives.

What will I be doing?

  • Supports teams with station and facility architectural and urban design, accessibility, signage and wayfinding, landscape and interiors design and technical expertise related to capital projects
  • Performs complete start to close-out project management on selected complex, high-risk projects to meet design excellence, customer experience, and operational and maintenance requirements
  • Conducts comprehensive design input to integrate station physical infrastructure features (e.g. civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, illumination, communication, acoustic, signage, landscaping, and equipment and furnishing), and optimizing physical infrastructure for quality customer service and efficient operations
  • Reviews and analyzes station infrastructure project charters and designs for inconsistencies, consequential impact among design disciplines, past practices, and resolving issues that may have impact on the immediate and ongoing safety, operation, maintenance, and efficiency of station facilities
  • Envisions project scope of work, initiates, prepares and presents terms of reference for execution, and subsequent addenda for agreements governing the engagement of consultants
  • Conducts forecasts and cost analyses on project engineering, construction and contingency designs, and ongoing operational and maintenance costs of project designs; recommends and implements appropriate changes to protect to minimize costs
  • Integrates, through comprehensive design review, the civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, illumination, communication, acoustic, and signage, to optimize physical infrastructure for quality customer service and efficient operations
  • Reviews and evaluates consultant studies, reports, design proposals, specifications and design and contract documents to ensure that they meet Metrolinx policies, procedures and standards
  • Attends coordination, review and construction meetings and provides technical expertise and guidance on the development and implementation of projects, influencing the designs to meet long-term requirements, cost effectiveness and, most of all, the customer’s needs
  • Manages consultant teams in the development of design documents, guidelines and specifications to support business case development for new transit infrastructure.
  • Engages with internal and external stakeholder to form alignment and understanding of design issues and concepts and supports the Design Divisions goals and mandates 
  • Attends and presents on behalf of Design Division at external public engagement meetings and presentations as required to support project development and schedules.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Completion of a university degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Transportation or Urban Planning from a recognized university or any combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • OAA or OALA Membership, LEED Accreditation, and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certifications would be considered assets.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience in the architectural design, planning, construction, and operations of public facilities, with a preference for experience in transit infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of multi-discipline architecture and engineering design concepts, principles and practices relevant to transit facilities.
  • Exposure to operations, maintenance and construction management standards and practices, including the ability to understand construction, operating and maintenance documents.
  • Knowledge of Contract Law, the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act, and the Occupational Health & Safety Act of Ontario.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and project management skills, including budget development and management.
  • Strong Graphic & Visual Communication Skills
  • Strong oral and written communications skills are essential, including an ability to provide quality reports, briefings, and presentations.
  • Experience in various types of project delivery models would be considered a strong asset, including AFP, DB, DBB, integrated development, etc. 
  • Experience in leading and submitting proposals for public approval would be considered and asset, including EA, TPAP process, SPAs, ZBA, etc.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license in good standing and the ability to maintain same
