Removing Concrete Moisture From the Construction Process

This course will provide an in depth examination of the inability of new construction projects to get their concrete slabs to pass flooring and roofing field moisture testing guidelines, which has reached epidemic proportions. This billion dollar plus a year problem is due to unanticipated project delays and the inevitable use of an expensive, disruptive, time consuming, topically applied, moisture mitigation systems.

The root cause is embedded in the flawed process of reliance on field moisture testing to accurately predict a successful flooring/roofing installation, the mistaken belief that a “warranty” for moisture is provided, the fundamental misunderstanding of concrete drying times and where the liability for moisture vapor emission lies.  This program reviews the magnitude of the problem, discusses the various causes, and offers proactive solutions that enable project teams to remove concrete moisture from the construction process effectively, efficiently and with liability truly mitigated.

Learning Objectives:  After completion of this course, participants will be able to understand and identify:

• The scope and magnitude of moisture related flooring failures

• The LEED implications and potential points relevant to this topic

• How to address all moisture sources related to concrete:

o The impact of topical and admixture remedies to both new and existing concrete floor substrates

o The role of vapor barriers and vapor retarders

• Concrete basics: the difference between curing, hydration, and drying

• How to guarantee flooring installation on schedule and therefore avoid construction delays

•How building lifecycle costs can be effected, and how traditionally unpredictable aspects (i.e. flooring installation and subsequent flooring performance) to a project can become controlled and known aspects
