Why migrant communities are struggling for place, and who is doing ‘what’ about it? On the day of an otherwise routine meeting of senior government officials on the topic of refugee settlement in Toronto, across from their offices at Peter and Richmond streets, a local shelter was overflowing with migrant and asylum seekers needing basic shelter.
Together, a broad group of refugee serving organizations, frontline service workers, health organizations and civil society groups called an impromptu press conference. The media coverage it generated put the simmering constitutional issue of shelter and affordable housing on the national front burner. Beyond Toronto, this issue persists as a challenge in every major Canadian city.
Join the Canadian Urban Institute and ULI Toronto as they revisit that fateful moment and unravel the experience of other Canadian cities to explore how communities rallied to support in the wake of provincial, federal and municipal deadlock.
