Government Abandons Certified Professionals Proposal

New Legislation Introduced March 12

On Thursday, March 12, the provincial government introduced omnibus legislation entitled the Protecting Tenants and Strengthening Community Housing Act, 2020. While not evident from the name, this proposed legislation aims to make changes to various acts including the Building Code Act, 1992.
As a result of strong stakeholder feedback from the OAA and other parties, the government has announced its decision “not to pursue the development of a framework to enable the use of certified professionals.” Having taken a strong stance against the proposal, the OAA commends this move, and will continue to work actively with government over ongoing changes to the delivery of building code services, including the establishment of an Administrative Authority. The OAA will continue to keep members informed as this file develops.
